Why learn a language?
In your personal life learning a new language can help you to discover new worlds. Language learning enables you to see things from a different angle. More colour is added to the tapestry of life. Your knowledge and awareness of the world is enriched by your greater understanding of it.
At work, learning another language could literally make your richer. Exporting is a great opportunity for many businesses. Being able to speak the language of another country will give you the confidence to take the plunge and embrace this enormous opportunity for growth.
Showing fluency in another language on your CV opens a world of new job opportunities for you. There will be less competition and you will be able to command a higher salary.
How does bespoke language training work?
Language training takes place either at our centre, or at your place of work, whichever is more convenient for you. We will arrange a time to visit you for an initial consultation, when we will discuss why you want to learn a language and the best way forward for you.
We will out together a scheme of work for you to approve and will then match you to one of our tutors, who will telephone you to arrange the date and time of your first lesson.
Your tutor will plan and deliver all lessons for your particular needs.
Do I have to book a weekly lesson?
We recommend that our learners have at least one lesson a week in order for the most progress to be made.
You can arrange with your tutor from week to week, if they have availability. Please be aware that our tutors are very busy and may not be able to accommodate you outside of your usual time. We also require 24 hours notice of cancellation, or we have to charge the full lesson fee.
What about online tuition?
For online tuition, you will need access to a computer, broadband and a headset. You will also need to download Skype.
Online tuition works in a similar way to one-to-one tuition. All lessons will be tailored to your needs, you be able to speak and listen to your tutor, as well as sharing files and practising writing.
Can I gain a qualification?
We do not currently offer any qualification courses. We can tutor you for external examination courses, but cannot enter you for these courses.
We are applying to be an Asset languages centre (OCR accredited) and plan to offer this qualification in the future.
Am I too old to learn?
No, is the simple answer, you are never too old to learn.
Our tutors will match methods of teaching to the way that you learn best, and will work with you to increase your confidence and fluency.
How do I become fluent?
This is a question that I am often asked and the answer is simply PRACTICE!
There are of course many techniques for improving language and many different ways of learning. This may be in classes at school, adult education classes, self-study or the total immersion method.
Spend as much time as you can reading and listening to the language. If you are a beginner, start off with short news articles, working your way up to the longer ones as you become more confident. This will enable you to get a feel for the language and to build up your vocabulary.
The most effective way of learning is to spend time with speakers of the language. If your village has a local twinning association, join it. You will get to meet the people of the country and get to understand the culture and traditions.
Of course, becoming fluent in a language is the easy thing to do, it’s keeping up your skills that is difficult.
Do you have parking at your centre?
During the day, we can obtain a parking pass for you to the visitor’s car park. In the evening there is a pay and display car park at the university, the spaces directly outside the centre are for staff only.
